We need to replace the Income Tax with a 50% across the board Tariff on all imports. This will work to level the playing field for our workers and companies. Currently, American workers are competing with third world sweat shops which are not subject to our environmental, child labor, or workplace safety laws. To understand why a tariff is a desirable form of Federal Taxation it is necessary to understand that for the first 140 years of our history. The Federal Government was financed by a 40% tariff on all imports. During this period, our country was largely agricultural and a was in fact importing a lot of merchandise and machinery from Europe. At the turn of the last century, our economy was in transition. We were becoming largely self sufficient and starting to be a manufacturing nation with agriculture becoming a much smaller factor in our economy. Because of the increase in production in this country, our dependence on imports was declining, and so was the tax revenue available to the Federal Government. The leaders at the time, wanted a new source of revenue and were faced with a Constitutional prohibition on levying a direct tax on the income of individuals. This was also a time when a number of amendments to the Constitution were being discussed and proposed. The solution to the declining availability of revenue from tariffs was the Income Tax. The result was the 16th amendment to the Constitution. Our
country is now going through another major shift in the structure of
our economy. Our manufacturing jobs are being moved to low wage
countries where goods can be manufactured, at slave labor wages, by
employees with little or no benefits. Then, because the current
leadership of both parties have bought into the idea of free trade,
The
goods are shipped to the U.S. to be sold. The candidates for the
Democrat party make noise about renegotiating NAFTA when pandering for
votes during their election campaigns. The proposals end once the
election is over. We need to understand what “free trade” is. Simply stated, free trade is the freedom for multinational corporations to ship manufacturing plants to third world countries, where goods can be manufactured at a very low cost. The companies are then free to ship the finished product back to the U.S., where the goods can be sold for a very high profit. This country needs to change back to a system of tariffs, to finance our Federal Government. The use of a tariff would raise the cost of imported goods, and reduce the incentive for the multinational corporations to outsource our jobs. The wage differential between the so called “developed nations” and the third world nations is so large, that the movement of manufacturing jobs, to the countries with the lowest manufacturing costs, will continue for the foreseeable future. We need to use this structural situation in the world economy to our benefit. We can now eliminate a very burdensome and intrusive income tax system, and replace it, with a tariff which will reduce, or stop, the loss of the manufacturing jobs in this country. The moves by those who are shipping our manufacturing base and jobs to third world sweatshops are hurting the working people in this country. A 2005 study found that NAFTA has hurt the living standard of workers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. I
